Chapter Seventeen

Once Tommy had headed off along a nearby dark street, Alicia made her way across the promenade, dodging late night traffic and crowds of increasingly drunk revelers. She knew she had to get back to the hotel, and she was almost shivering now that she no longer had the benefit of Tommy's hoodie, but she felt drawn to the old amusement arcade.

Stopping in front of the main doors, she saw nothing but darkness inside – along with her own reflection. At the same time she couldn't shake the sense that she was being watched.

Leaning forward, she cupped her hands around her eyes and tried to peer into the arcade. Despite the almost complete lack of light, she was just about able to make out some old gaming machines near the door, although the overall impression she was getting of the place was one of profound sadness. In some ways the arcade seemed to embody the rundown state of the town, and when she looked down at her feet she saw that loads of dirt and rubbish from the street had been blown into the old entrance of the building.

She looked back into the arcade and watched for any hint of the figure she'd spotted earlier, but now she was starting to think that she'd simply been tricked by an errant reflection. Finally she stepped back and looked up at the faded sign above the doors, although so much damage had been caused over the years that she couldn't even make out the name. Turning, she began to make her way along the promenade, although as she reached the street corner she heard a banging sound. Glancing to her left, she was surprised to see that a door on the side of the building was open and had begun to flap in the wind.

Heading over, she held the door open and looked into the darkness of the arcade. She had absolutely no desire to go in there, partly because she was tired and cold – and partly because she figured that there might well be all sorts of weirdos and freaks lurking inside. She imagined a bunch of drug addicts glaring back at her, but after a moment she realized that the figure had returned and was now standing next to an old claw grabber machine. Staring back at the figure, she told herself that under no circumstances was she going to actually enter the building, although she was already starting to notice that this particular figure looked to be young, even though its face was hidden by a large hood.

Finally the figure stepped forward, and Alicia had to fight the urge to run.

“Is he dead?” the figure asked, before pulling its hood down to reveal the face of a thin young girl.

“Who?” Alicia replied, before realizing exactly what she meant. “Henry Wrackton? No, I don't think so. He wasn't when they took him away. I think he had a heart attack.”
